week 3 leader erin; debate the opinion
Hello Dr. ppp and Class,
After assessing how I participate in conflict I learned I tend to compromise. According to Yoder-Wise (2015), compromising is considered “an exchange of concessions as it creates a middle ground.” After completing the assessment and evaluating my approach to conflict I do believe I tend to compromise, and I understand how this approach could use work because it can leave unresolved issues on the table. After reviewing the different types of conflict resolution, I prefer when managers or leaders use collaborating in the work place. Collaborating is the most effective way to fulfill all the needs brought to attention during conflict (Yoder-Wise, 2015). Avoiding is by far the most frustrating of the models to deal with within the work setting. Personally, this is so due to the resentment I have seen build when a conflict is left to brew. Yoder-Wise (2015), does make a good point that sometimes avoiding conflict is a good thing in a no-win situation. This is the only time I would agree the model of avoiding is ever a good thing.
When I consider how I approach conflict I would like to be able to collaborate more. Often when conflict requires resolution we are trying to come to the easiest conclusion and that is where compromising comes in. For instance, let us find common ground, but if we sit down and take more time to evaluate the situation and get creative with a response we can collaborate and reach all the goals in front of us.
Oore, Leiter, and LeBlanc (2015), make a great point concerning conflict in organization with their article Individual and organization factors promoting successful responses to workplace conflict, by stating “it is inevitable, difficult, and important.” The key point being conflict is important. The cons of conflict are numerous and include bad feelings among coworkers, upset staff, and much more. The pros are being able to move forward with conflict resolution to a new goal that better suits the work environment.
Best Regards,
Erin
