Nursing - Test Development
Test Development Assignment (Group Assignment)
This project is designed to be completed in groups of two or three.
Purpose:
The purpose of this assignment is to develop a test blueprint and NCLEX style test questions. In addition, completion of this assignment will provide real-life application of course knowledge.
Objectives:
This assignment addresses the following course objectives:
- Describe the concepts of measurement, evaluation and testing in nursing education. (SLO #1 and #3).
- Elucidate the qualities of effective measurement instruments. (SLO #3)
- Plan for classroom testing, including writing test items, assembling and administering tests and analyzing test results. (SLO #3, 5, 7 and 9)
Reading Assignments:
- Oermann & Gaberson Textbook Chapters 5-8
Directions: Using your texts as a guide, develop a test blueprint for a fifteen-item test to be given to second year Associate Degree Nursing students. You may use any concept that would be taught to a second-year nursing students.
Develop five learning objectives following the guidelines for objective writing in your book. Be sure to use the appropriate verbs for each learning domain. Make sure the objectives are measurable.
Use the five learning objectives that you develop and Blooms Taxonomy (Remembering, Understanding, Applying, Analyzing, Evaluating, and Creating) as row and column headings. Your test questions should be at the higher levels of Blooms Taxonomy. Place the actual question number into the appropriate objective and Bloom’s taxonomy level. Each question number should only be used once. Indicate the number of the question in the grid (ie question # 3, 4, and 7), not the number of questions (amount). You may have multiple question numbers in each box.
For each question, identify the appropriate category of the NCLEX-RN test plan in which the question would fall. Make sure your percentage of questions per category mimics the NCLEX-RN test plan’s distribution of content.

Develop the test with 10 multiple-choice questions and a combination of 5 multiple response questions or drag and drop questions (NCLEX format). You will have to review NCLEX formatting and appropriate NCLEX style questions prior to writing your test questions.
Your test may reflect any nursing topic for a total of 15 questions. Use your textbooks as resources. Be sure to follow NCLEX format, especially for the alternate style questions. Use the NCLEX test plan and the provided NCLEX links on Blackboard to assist in this process.
Here are some guidelines for constructing a NCLEX style test:
- Use the present tense
- Always use the active voice
- Capitalize answers following stems that end with a question mark
- Use lowercase answers for open ended stems
- Do not use punctuation when you have an incomplete stem; the punctuation will follow the answer choices
- If your stem is close ended, then you will not use punctuation following the answer choices
- Use the term “nurse”; do not use “you”
- Use the term “should”; do not use “would”
- Always use the term “client”
- When talking about the examiner, use the term “sign”
- When talking about the client, use the term “symptom”
- When talking about manifestations, use both “sign and symptom”
- Do not give extraneous information; only provide the information that the reader needs to answer the question
- Always describe your clients as a client who has “xyz”; not an “xyz” client
- For mental illness: (example) “a client diagnosed with depression” not “a depressed client”
- For medications, use generic names only.
- Do not use abbreviations
- Label lab values and vital signs
- Use F and C for temperature
- Use the term “report”, do not use the term “complain”
- Do not use contractions
- Do not use brand names of equipment, etc.
- To signify ongoing activity, use verbs ending in “ing”
- Spell out numbers thru nine except for ages, decimals, %, temperatures, dates, months, or time of day
- Arrange answer choices with numbers and terms sequentially
- Make sure that your answer choices are within 3 to 5 character lengths of each other
- Only use plausible answer choices
- All questions should be nurse focused
The grading for the project is not limited to the above guidelines. Please use your textbook and other resources to assist in the test construction process.
If you use a test bank to create your test, you will receive a zero on the assignment.
Submission and Evaluation Criteria:
Refer to the grading rubric attached to the assignment drop box. All points must be adequately addressed to receive full credit. Submit completed assignment to the assignment dropbox by the due date listed on the course calendar.
