According to the Leadership Environment Assessment Survey my organization supports, encourages and expects leadership among its members . The organization definitely strives to promote leadership and tries to assist its employees in excelling in the field. The organization sets up educational tools and workshops for learning new skills, enforces education requirements and provides incentives for continued education and certifications. It holds large staff meetings every so often to go over concerns, new policies ask questions and recognize staff for their excellence in services. This allows members a chance to be heard and voice any concerns and ideas for improvement.
My organization also has a growth program for nurses that want to progress their career and train for another specialty. It requires certain criteria and the candidate must meet the educational requirements for that specialty but this allows more opportunities and enables nurses to branch out into areas of interest. We also have a mentorship program in which novice nurses are paired with an experienced nurse for a couple months to teach, motivate and guide through their transition into the nursing field. This allows for the nurses to use their leadership skills to mold new nurses into competent, confident and motivated individuals. It promotes an environment filled with learning, growth and collaboration.
In order to make my environment at work more conductive to the development of leadership skills I can become more involved and engaged in staff meetings that are held. I can voice my thoughts and concerns in hopes of implementing changes to certain aspects of the organization that I feel would be beneficial for all. I can also develop more leadership skills by volunteering to mentor or precept new nurses. This would be empowering to me by sharing my knowledge and expertise with new nurses and leading them towards building a strong foundation in becoming competent nurses. In doing so I would feel accomplished and important in shaping the nursing field. In striving to build one’s career and improve both academically and professional, one has to excel in all aspects of nursing. In working towards excellence, nurses strengthen their skills and knowledge and therefore become stronger leaders (Grossman & Valiga, 2017). Leaders that care are always looking to improve the profession while motivating and empowering others around them (Scanlon & Woolforde, 2016).

Best,
Solomia Pullen
