Nursing as caring explores the assumptions that we a people are naturally caring which plays a role in the discipline and profession of nursing (Smith & Parker, 2017). To know one\'s self is to understand why we act the way we do and fully understand our intentions. As human beings it may be difficult to care for someone, but we have an innate function to provide care to people in need. This is expressed in how we care for difficult people in nursing.
To be authentic in nursing we must understand how we care for people and why we care the way we do. Authenticity is defined as being genuine (Pinelli et al., 2018). As nurses we can use this to understand how to care for our patients. Intention in nursing is defined as nurturing persons living caring and growing in care (Smith & Parker, 2017).
It can be difficult to live the theory of nursing as caring because of the strain of working in a cost driven system. Often the focus is on the cost of care not the patient. I do not feel as though my perspective of caring has changed, just my view of health care. I believe I am more caring than when I began my career as a nurse because I see the desperate need in my community.
Compassion fatigue is detrimental to both care givers and patients. Self-care and knowing when to take a break is vital to the healthcare system. It is difficult for a nurse to care authentically when they are experiencing compassion fatigue.
Best Regards,
Erin
