Role: Director, National Institute of Nursing Research, National Institutes of Health
Nurse Y: As a public health nurse within the institute, what do you consider to be your specific role in the provision of health to the entire population?
Dr. X: With the institute being a center of research, my role revolves around assisting the nursing researchers to work on various nursing aspects that are of public interest. In so doing, various elements and approach to care will be developed to avert the current situation. In the long haul, such activities would impact not only the general public but also improve nursing practice using the evidence-based and scientific practices which form the goals of the institute.
Nurse Y: What do you consider to be the most rewarding part of the nursing role within the National Institute of Health?
Dr. X: I have a feeling that the most rewarding role as a public health nurse in the institute is assuring the department of availability of equipment and resources that are useful in carrying out various research activities as well as sharing of the outcome and recommendations from the studies conducted. This impacts other public health teams that can work efficiently towards meeting the goals of the institute.
Nurse Y: What are some of the inter-professional networkings within your work setting?
Dr. X: The institute has a mission to advance the biomedical search and enhance human health via research projects and share resources that will be geared towards meeting its goals. With this in mind, the networking usually takes the form of coordinating with other centers and institute that the agency has in different places. At the same time, the institute works together with other organizations such as the Center for Disease Control and Prevention as well as World Health organization to meet the general health of the targeted populations. At the same time, the agency has various departments with various specialties. In the process of undertaking the research activities, these departments and their specialist work together for the betterment of the goals of the institute.
Nurse Y: As the director of public health nursing team within the institute, what are the leadership activities that you usually engage in?
Dr. X: With every component of institute having different research agenda, the leadership activities that I do undertake encompasses taking part in shaping the agency's research planning, outlook and activities. There also exists the budgeting for the funding purposes of the activities to be done by the department. I also take part in the policy making for the institute which is used to plan, manage and coordinate activities.
Nurse Y: What is your advice for the future APRNs concerning the various activities that are undertaken by National Institute of Health?
Dr. X: Since the APRN’s are advancing in the various nursing field, it is essential for them to work on multiple research activities that are capable of solving nursing problems. They can then join the National Institute of Health and intensify the various research activities that would see the agency meeting its goals. At the same time, the APRN’s should understand the various changes that exist within the nursing profession where there is need t embrace evidence-based practice. These can only be achieved via research activities which they need to be part of.
Nurse Y Thank you for your time.
Dr. X: You are welcome (Dr. X:, personal and email communication, June 29, 2018).
