APA format and college-level writing can be challenging for students who are returning to school after a break from academia. The introduction of this paper includes an example title page. Short papers for undergraduate students do not require an abstract. The references page provides samples of different types of sources, including websites, textbooks, journals, and online journals. The following advice offers guidance on writing your paper while adhering to APA standards.

The introductory paragraph and subsequent paragraphs should consist of at least three sentences, with an average of four to five sentences and a maximum of seven sentences. The last sentence of the introduction should be your thesis statement, summarizing the purpose of the assignment and your approach to it. Preceding the thesis statement, the preceding sentences should provide background information to contextualize your thesis for readers.

Each paragraph should begin with a topic sentence that summarizes the main argument or idea of the paragraph. Additionally, the last sentence of each paragraph should serve as a transition statement, connecting the discussed points of the paragraph with the upcoming content. Within each paragraph, provide your own thoughts on the topic and include a paraphrased sentence from a source, followed by an in-text citation. The source can support your opinion, offer an alternative viewpoint, or provide background information. For further guidance on paragraphs, refer to the Writing Center’s webpage on the topic.

Whenever possible, avoid direct quotes and ensure they constitute no more than 10% of your paper. In-text citations should include the author’s last name (or website name), year, and page number if applicable. The in-text citation should match the corresponding reference list citation, excluding the author initials. If a source lacks a date, use “n.d.” in place of the year. Every sentence that incorporates information from a source requires a citation according to APA style. If you have more than two sentences of information from one source, include an in-text citation or parenthetical citation in each sentence. It is crucial to be cautious in order to avoid unintentional plagiarism, as undergraduate students often misinterpret these rules.

Exercise caution when using websites as sources, as many lack factual accuracy and impartiality. It is advisable to avoid websites like Wikipedia, About.com, Answers.com, and similar platforms. While some .com sites may be acceptable, students often struggle to assess their reliability. Generally, websites ending in .gov, .net, .edu, .org, and similar extensions tend to be more trustworthy than .com sources.

The body of your paper should consist of several paragraphs or more. The conclusion paragraph should summarize the main points of your paper and place it in the context of social change. Avoid introducing new topics in the conclusion but feel free to suggest directions for future research. The conclusion should primarily reflect your own thoughts and analysis without requiring source citations.

Carefully follow the instructions provided and download the grading rubric from Doc Sharing to understand how assignments are assessed. A one-page essay refers to a full page of writing without including elements such as references, tables or figures, or the title page. Using two sources means utilizing different sources, not simply providing two in-text citations for the same source. When citing multiple pages from the same website, include different in-text citations and reference entries.

For web sources, follow the APA citation format:

Author, A. (date). Title of document [Format description]. Retrieved from http://URL

The author can be an individual, group, or organization, while the format description is primarily used for blog posts or nonwebsite materials. Omit the format description if referring solely to a website.

For instance, to cite this webpage as an example, the author is “National Council of Teachers of English,” and the publication year is 2012. The title of the webpage is “NCTE/IRA Standards for the English Language Arts.” The URL for this page is http://www.ncte.org/standards/ncte-ira. Using this information, the citation should appear as follows:

National Council of Teachers of English. (2012). NCTE/IRA standards for the English language arts. Retrieved from http://www.ncte.org/standards/ncte-ira

If you have any questions regarding paper writing or proper source citation, feel free to reach out to the Writing Center.
