Nurs 6001: Foundations of Graduate Study

Initial Post

As we’ve all probably come to realize by now, the online classroom is totally different from having to go to a physical classroom. Although it is more flexible to the student’s needs, it takes a  lot of self-discipline and responsibility. I learned this when I had to take a lot of my prerequisites for nursing school online in one semester. Planning, time management, communication, and technology use are all components that an online learner need to take account of. Today, I will discuss technology use and communication.

To begin with, one must have a contingency plan when it comes to technology. As helpful technology can be, it is not always reliable. Due to this fact, I’ve learned that it’s important to always have at least one other computer/device available to access in case the primary one gives out. Continually, a successful student must always save all assignments on his computer, a USB drive, and back up his computer as often as possible. Information can be lost very easily. One must always be technologically conscious and be aware of the resources available when things go awry. For instance, Walden has an entire page dedicated to resources for the online learner, especially technology help (Walden University, n.d.). Having good technology use strategies will ensure that the online learner is prepared for any mishaps and ensure that all assignments are completed correctly and submitted on time.

Another important strategy for the online learner is great communication skills. Unlike the real, in-person classroom, the online learner does not have body language, intonation, or facial expressions to draw conclusions (Laureate Education, 2012e). The student’s writing is the only form of interaction with other classmates and faculty (Laureate Education). Therefore, using proper tone and appropriateness in writing is crucial (Laureate Education). It’s imperative that the student makes himself very clear in writing by using the active voice that APA standards prefer (Walden University, 2012c). Also, proofreading, editing, and revising the writing as much as possible to ensure proper tone, appropriateness, and language is being utilized (Walden University, 2012f). Through the strategy of communication, the online learner will guarantee a higher chance of clarity when interacting with peers and faculty and prevent misunderstandings.
