I am completing a practicum for school. My practicum consists of working with online students in a Master’s degree program for Leadership in Nursing.
My objectives are as follows:
- Facilitate learning of master's level nursing students in an online environment utilizing theoretical foundations as students complete their leadership program.
- Ensure communication among students in the online learning environment is professional and ethical while promoting safe, high quality, patient-centered care.
- Utilize the NLN Core Competencies for Academic Nurse Educators to provide an optimal learning environment for students as they apply the nurse Executive Competencies in their practicum roles.
I must create a journal for each day. There are 3 separate days.
Journal Entry Guidelines
Each student is required to complete a journal entry for each practicum experience day and/or activity in which they participate. Journal entries include a variety of components, so review the information below carefully.
Using the Journal Entry Documentation Format, record each practicum experience day and/or activity in which you participate.
Journal entries should:
- Clarify course objectives, pose and solve problems, reflect on and analyze experiences, and raise questions about what is being observed and learned. What you are ultimately trying to do is make a linkage with theory, research, and practice as an educator or nurse administrator/leader. Journal entries should reflect how concepts, theories and research findings from previous classes are applied in the practice setting. Documentation of sources should be included.
- Integrate evidence-based practice, theory, problem solving, professionalism, leadership, and team relationships with preceptor, nursing students, faculty, nurses, administrators, and/or other disciplines.
- Describe how quality, safe, patient-centered care was impacted directly or indirectly during your experience.
- Incorporate self-assessment and growth in relation to the NLN Core Competencies for the Nurse Educator, the AONE Nurse Executive Competencies or ANA Nursing Administration Scope and Standards of Practice. Include in your narrative how professional competencies are being incorporated.
- Include personal reflection on activities you participated in.
- Document review of evidence-based articles. All students are required to include an annotated bibliography as part of each journal entry.
- For each practicum experience, you should select at least one article relevant to the learning objective(s) for that day. In your journal entry, you should respond to the readings you have selected—what were the main points in the reading, what you found interesting, how was the reading helpful in nursing education/nursing administration. You should prepare yourself each week for the practicum experience – do not just show up and “go with the flow”—this is to be a purposeful learning experience. You may also have spontaneous experiences during your practicum—something you had not planned on. In those instances, reflect on the experience, find an article related to some aspect of the experience and then analyze the experience. Describe evidence-based strategies you would propose to resolve any education or practice issues encountered during the practicum experience.
- Annotated Bibliography - An annotated bibliography is, in simple terms, a reference list (using APA format) with a paragraph added underneath each reference citation. This paragraph briefly describes the focus/content of the article consisting of only 1-3 sentences. Remember, you are to make reference to the article in your journal entry stating how you used the information for the practicum experience that day. You must have at least one article per practicum day.
