Workplace advocacy in nursing entails nurses ensuring the environment of providing care is safe and conducive to professionalism and suitability of working by other health care workers. This includes ensuring that its violence-free, occupational and health standards are well taken care of. Nurses can also participate in decision-making through organization meetings to let their grievances be considered. Professional advocacy ensures nurses’ societal perceived roles exceed the professional parts; they have a chance to advocate from the profession guiding body to be given time first to address the issues that affect individuals regarding the profession. Nurse leaders must utilize their knowledge of sociopolitical factors to understand the environment.
Patient advocacy is a core role in nursing practice. Patient advocacy involves addressing all factors and responding to instances of unethical and inappropriate behaviors that jeopardize the interests of the patient life. Nurses speak when they see impaired actions regarding a patient, for example, delay in medication. Advocating and collaborating on patients’ behalf helps create a relationship based on mutual respect and trust that enhances nurses’ credibility in providing care (Abbasinia et al., 2020). Patient advocacy ensures protecting patients’ rights and interests are taken care of in the healthcare setting. Creating intimate interpersonal relationships between the patient and the nurses eases the provision of care and recovery. The interaction between the nurse and the patient cannot rule out points of weakness, thus providing holistic care.
Existential advocacy (patient advocacy) helps communicate patients’ deep feelings that can affect health. This is achieved after creating an interpersonal relationship. Patient advocacy in nursing treats the patient as a whole rather than discrete. Nurses extend from patient advocacy to reaching the patient’s relatives to make decisions regarding health care outcomes. Patient advocacy also includes educating patients about an illness they are suffering from, giving a voice, double-checking for errors, and ensuring patients receive resources that provide effective outcomes from the disease.
Workplace advocacy is also a common type of advocacy in the nursing practice. Nurses ensure that the care environment is suitable for the patient, healthcare workers, and other significant persons. Nurses advocate for the work environment to enhance staff to have a comfortable place to work. Nurse leaders seek information from the team regarding the environment and voice it to the relevant authority (Green, 2021). Workplace advocacy ensures all the systems within that environment are working smoothly and that it does not bring challenges to the staff. Advocacy in the nurse work environment contributes to positive changes within the organizational culture.
