The interviewee states that he takes systemic admission of clients admitted to the mental illness Centre. A mental status examination is utilized to assess a mentally ill client. The advanced psychiatric nurse primarily provides primary, acute, and specialty health care across the lifespan through evaluating, diagnosing, and treating mental illness. He further educates patients and their family members about mental health and medical preventive health measure, medication regimen, and treatment plans for mental health clients. He was collaborating with the interdisciplinary team, including the physician. The nurse practitioner in the mental health center states he combats stigma and helps patients and their families in the management. Additionally, he says he participates in administering medications and liaising with physicians, social workers, and other health professionals regarding the patient’s welfare.

The interviewee further states his developmental phases as APN. The transformation from a novice to an expert took time. The struggle from being a novice uplifted him to become an expert advanced psychiatric nurse. The interviewee states he possessed poor communication skills during her practice. The fear of working with mentally ill patients was paramount during his early stages of practicing as an advanced psychiatric nurse. The knowledge of the clinical management of mental illness was less rooted than the theoretical part. However, as a novice nurse practitioner, the association with other health care challenges has enabled the interviewee to shine in all aspects of managing psychiatric illnesses.

Violent and aggressive clients are often accompanied to mental health centers. The interviewee states he has been encompassed by varied challenges while caring for the patients. The interviewee’s problems in his practice include; violence while delivering care and patients denying that they suffer from mental illnesses. The patients display unpredictable behavior, which leads to more significant stress and burnout. Despite these challenges as NP, continual education has enabled the interviewee to deal with situations of aggression, denial of mental illness, and potentially refusal to take medication of particular patient groups in psychiatric and rehabilitation centers. The interviewee further stated that he remained calm, listened to what the aggressive patients were saying, asked open-ended questions, and provided an opportunity to explain what had angered them; hence it was easy to evade the patient’s aggressiveness.

The interviewer demonstrates the stages from being a novice to an expert. The interviewee, being a novice in the first place, had no previous experience in a psychiatric Centre; hence it was hectic for him to decide which tasks were most relevant. The association with daily processes made him become an advanced beginner. He could identify enough real-world situations regarding the increased mental illness. Continual education enables the interviewee to become competent. Collaboration with other staff increased assistance and support in setting priorities for clients’ needs by providing guidelines for recognizing patterns. After six months of advanced practice in the specialty area, the interviewee was proficient in delivering care. He uses case studies to stimulate critical thinking, especially in situations that pose challenges, for instance, where the patient refuses treatment.

The concepts in chapter four, Role Transitions from novice to expert, are vital in guiding advanced nursing practitioners during their clinical practice. The phase in role transitions includes; novice, advanced beginner, competent, proficient, and expert (Ritchie et al., 2020). Each step is significant since health care providers grow as they practice within their profession. No one is termed an expert in the first place; instead, every transition stage is vital in providing support for transitioning to being an expert. Students pursuing an expanded role as APNs, often experience a lack of self-confidence and hesitation, as demonstrated by the interviewee during the first time in a clinical setting. Understanding the role transitions allows nurse practitioners to evaluate their self-efficacy, feelings and current competencies are necessary components for APN professional socialization. However, the concepts in the chapter, Role transitions, help identify competencies and professional self-efficacy. The experience of insufficiency in the first place in clinical areas relates to the concepts explained in role transitions. Finally, APNs’ progress in the clinical setting is enhanced by self-reflection, which leads to self-development.
