This will include a bibliography (relevant to issue, not too lengthy), one article & any additional handouts that you may deem necessary for your fellow students to understand & be able to participate in the discussion. Brief must be in correct APA format. The briefs will be posted so that all students can read them prior to the student online presentation. A sample brief will be posted under the course content for students to review.
For APA format- Need a Page 2 Abstract
My position supports policy that the use of direct-to-consumer advertising should
continue to be permitted in the United States.
The following information is provided to support my position:
- The use of DTCA is regulated by the FDA, whose role is to oversee the marketing therapeutic drugs and to provide consumer protection. The DCTA guidelines require that all information provided be accurate and complete, including a list of side effects and contraindication for the use of the therapeutic agents. The FDA continues to monitor and refine the use of pharmaceutical advertising (Palumbo, 2004).
- DTCA empowers consumers by providing them with health information, education and motivation to discuss symptoms, and guides them in informed decision making (Cline, 2005). Physicians report that patient visits are stimulated by DTCA and have resulted in new diagnoses (Salls, 2004).
- “Informed consumers are essential to the fair and efficient functioning of the free market economy” (Nelson, 2007, p. 27). DTCA currently accounts for 2 billion on advertising to the public (Nelson, 2007), yet according to a 2002 physician survey, only 1 in 10 consumers who inquired about DTCA products received a prescription (Bennett, 2009). The use of DTCA does not appear to have a significant impact in prescribing practice (Weisman, 2004).
- DTCA has changed social norms by increasing the awareness of conditions such as erectile dysfunction, depression and sexually transmitted diseases. It can improve public health enhancing knowledge of diseases that are undertreated and undiagnosed conditions.
