The Institute of Medicine released a report in 2010 laying out goals for the future of nursing to be implemented by the year 2020. This report can potentially have a positive effect on nursing and contribute to the empowerment of advance practice nurses across the country. Some of the recommendations in this report are that nurses should practice to the full extent of their education and training and that nurses should be full partners with physicians when redesigning healthcare in the U.S. (The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, Medicine, 2010). This recommendation could lead to advanced practice nurses (APRN) and family nurse practitioners (FNP) to having their own practices without being overseen by a physician. This would allow APRNs to bill for services provided that the physician typically gets reimbursed for.
Another strong recommendation made by the IOM report is that nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training through improved education systems that is seamless in academic progression (The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, Medicine, 2010). As a direct result of this recommendation, Kennesaw State University in Georgia implemented a master’s program in Nursing in Advanced Care Management and Leadership. This program was designed to provide the best education and training to develop nurse leaders of the future. Several other Universities have also re-evaluated and made significant changes to their nursing programs to include leadership development (Grossman & Valiga, 2017).
The IOM report has descriptively outlined the important changes that need to be made to advance the nursing profession, now it is up to nurses to apply these recommendations. There are however some barriers to utilizing these recommendations. One main barrier is the current legislation that has restrictions on the scope of practice of nurses and advance practice nurses. The IOM recognizes also that physicians continue to be a main barrier to modernizing the scope of practice of advance practice nurses (The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, Medicine, 2010).
In my opinion, in order for nurses to be empowered and help implement the recommendations of the IOM report The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health (2010) they must actively participate in professional organizations and communicate with elected state and federal representatives. Nurses must continue to advance their education and build a stronger more innovative professional image of nurses and continue to support and empower each other.

Liz Roberts
