Discussion Question #1
Purpose:
A discussion board is a “space” where students can further explore the course content. It can promote collaboration, and offer individuals room to explore topics, issues, and/or questions.
Course Objectives:
This assignment addresses the following course objectives:
- Describe the concepts of measurement, evaluation and testing in nursing education. (SLO #1 and #3).
- Elucidate the qualities of effective measurement instruments. (SLO #3)
- Illustrate the concepts of performance evaluation and assessment of clinical competencies. (SLO #3)

- Oermann & Gaberson Textbook Chapters 17
- Dennison, Rosselli & Dempsey Chapters 4 & 14
Discussion Question Guidelines:
Post an initial response to the discussion question. This initial response should include a minimum of 300 words and include a comprehensive approach to the issue being discussed. Personal insight and experiences should be included. All postings must include a minimum of one scholarly reference using APA format both in-text and as a reference. Please avoid attachments to the discussion board. Post your response directly to the discussion board.
Post a response to at least two of your peer’s postings. This response should include your perspective, questions, and additional insight to the topic being discussed. . This response should be a minimum of 100 words and be a comprehensive, substantive reply. A response that only contains, “Great post or I agree” is not substantive enough. You do not have to include a scholarly reference for your response to this peer posting.
To facilitate scholarly discussion, initial postings and responses to peers should be posted on separate days. Waiting until the due date to post limits scholarly dialogue between peers.
- For courses requiring the initial post and peer response in separate weeks, the initial postings should be posted one week and responses to peers should be posted the second week.
- For courses requiring the initial post and peer response in the same week, the initial postings should be posted at the beginning of the week and responses to peers should be posted at the end of the week.
All rules related to APA and grammar applies to all discussion postings.
Directions:
Respond to the discussion question below based on the guidelines presented above.
- Reflect back to when you were in nursing school. What types of classroom and clinical evaluation processes were used for student evaluations? Were they beneficial?
- Oermann and Gaerson reference Nitko (2004) that using test in a punitive, threatening, or vindictive way is unethical and that unannounced tests are unfair. Do you agree? Why or why not?
