Antibiotics and Probiotics
The more significant concern with broad-spectrum antibiotic use is C.Diff. I am sure the majority of you have heard of this troublemaker, and many probably deal with it on a daily basis. C.Diff is an anerobic bacteria that often resides in our gut flora without problems but when that balance with the good and bad bacteria in our gut gets thrown off by the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics , C.Diff can proliferate and cause significant illness, namely in the form of diarrhea.
Now, there are antibacterial treatments for established C.Diff but what about probiotics for prevention? Probiotics are being promoted a lot these days, and patients are going to be asking you about them.
Question-What are your thoughts on the use of probiotics?
At least one reference should be a Journal.
