A project is a professional endeavor generally carried out in a practice area of interest to the student that results in a formal paper. The project examines the most current available evidence and applies it to a clinical or practice situation. The project provides the student the opportunity to develop a mentored activity in clinical practice, education, or leadership using an evidence-based practice approach. The purpose is to enable students to meet program objectives through development of skills to interrelate theory, research, and practice in nursing.
EBP PROJECT GUIDELINES
The EBP project is a scholarly activity where the student uses scholarly thinking and behavior to develop the project. The student defines a problem or need relevant to their interest and/or area of practice and designs a plan to address the problem. The final form of the project includes a formal paper. The advisor assisting the student will determine the final form of the project.
The following list includes examples of projects:
• Best practices of a clinical situation
• Development of nursing intervention
• Development of methods of measuring outcomes in a nursing intervention or process of care
• Development or implementation of an evidence-based practice project
MSN PROJECT PAPER GUIDELINES
Introduction
Introduction to the Problem: This section broadly introduces the topic while laying the foundation for the problem statement. Literature is used to support the foundation and relevant information, such as statistics, may be presented related to the population or practice area. At the end of this section the problem the project addresses must be clearly described in the PICO format.
Significance of the problem to nursing practice: This section describes the importance of the project to the population of interest and how it relates to nursing practice.
Review of the literature
The literature review should be organized to include an introductory paragraph providing an overview of the section. The extensiveness of the literature review will be determined by the project and the available information related to the topic. The literature review must focus on current research related to the project.
Literature related to the statement of the problem: References that have immediate implication for the project are critically reviewed, analyzed, and synthesized. The relevance of all cited literature of the project should be made explicit. Sources should be carefully selected and reflect appropriate scientific quality and rigor.
Summary of the review of literature: The concluding paragraphs should succinctly synthesize the important studies and concepts as they relate to the project. The reader should conclude the review of the literature with a clear understanding of the “state of the science” as it relates to the project.
Statement of the problem
The statement of the problem should include information focused specifically about the population/area of practice interest. Information should indicate the needs of the population and using data and literature and demonstrate how this relates to the problem and purpose of the project. Include a description of the population/practice area and specific needs of the population/practice area.
Statement of purpose: A purpose statement of project aim should be clearly presented.
Theoretical framework/model: This section discusses the organizing framework or theory selected to support the project. Exploration and discussion of the framework as well as a clear delineation of how the theory applies to the project and the population is addressed.
Literature related to the theoretical framework: Include research and/or theoretical references, which support selection of the underlying framework of the project.
Intervention and implementation
Includes an introductory paragraph discussing information to be presented in this section.
Design of the project: In this section the purpose is restated. It includes a description of how the student proposes that the project be done.
Project participants: This section describes the target audience. Who are the stakeholders.
Implementation: This section describes how and when the project is proposed to be implemented.
Evaluation: This section discusses the proposed evaluation plan for the project.
The intervention/implementation section describers the who, what, when, and where of the project. Description of expert panel consultation or small pilot projects may be included in this section. This section describes the proposed implementation and may include any pertinent information regarding meetings, memos, minutes of meetings, educational materials, or any other information necessary for understanding the process undertaken to accomplish the project. It is recommended appendices be used.
Evaluation/conclusion
Includes an introductory paragraph discussing information to be presented in this section.
Evaluation: This section discusses the proposed evaluation of the project, including both process and outcomes. The proposed results are evaluated and linked to the literature review.
Conclusion: Conclusions that may be drawn from the implementation and evaluation of the project.
Implications for nursing practice: This section discusses the implications for nursing practice, education, and or future research.
Summary: This section summarizes the project in its entirety.
Reflection
Program outcomes: Reflect on the program outcomes and describe how the outcomes were achieved in the development of the project.
