According to Milstead (2016), health policy is a set of regulations in place by government organizations to improve the health of a population. An example of this is the Patient Protection and Accordable Care Act, which strongly suggests the importance of nurse practitioners to the changing health care system (Golden, 2015). As nurse practitioners the act mentions working nurse-managed health clinics and continued independence of advanced practice nurses (Golden, 2015).
Public Policy is defined as the action of alerting the government of problems related to the population and the government initiating action to help alleviate the problem (Milstead, 2016). In the United states drug policy is considered a public policy involving both prescription and illegal drugs. According to De Jarlais (2015), as advanced practicing nurses it will be our job to help initiate policy changes and initiate research to help support more appropriate laws that help change the current health care system.
Social programs are designed by the government to reduce healthcare costs while improving overall health of certain populations (Milstead, 2016). An example of a social program within the United States is the Child Welfare system, which is defined as ensuring access to health care and general systems needed for the well-being of children (Ardelean, 2017). Part of the Child welfare system focuses on protecting children from neglect and abuse (Fregia, 2018). As an advanced practice nurse, it will be mandatory to report signs of abuse of a child to Child Protective Services (Fregia, 2018).
