week 1 health system, focusing on a health policy issue
The discussion board this week is focusing on a health policy issue, not a disease process or condition. You post is a review of a health condition and does not detail any health policy component. Please look at your colleagues posts and my comments to gain insight regarding what we are discussing this week.
Most nurses are familiar with their roles as caregivers and even a educators. According to Millstead (2013), nurses must adopt multiple roles, including that of political activist and advocate. She went on to explain that \"nurses cannot afford to limit their actions to monitoring bills; they must seize the initiative and use their considerable collective and individual influence to ensure the health, welfare, and protection of the public and health care professionals\" (Millstead, 2013, pp15-16).
As a key political actor (nurse) examine a health policy issue that impacts your current or past work setting which you are passionate about. In your discussion:
1. Describe the health policy issue in detail. Describe how the issue impacts nursing practice, patient care delivery or health outcomes.
2. State clearly why you support or oppose the issue. Present evidence to support your position on the issue.
3. In your replies defend your opinion to your fellow students (agenda setting)?
4. When you reply to your peers intentionally take the opposing position to theirs. Use evidence to support your opposition to their position. (By challenging your colleagues you force them to defend their position. This allows them to critically analyze the issue and develop a clear and comprehensive position on the issue.)
~Think outside of the box~
Issues you might consider: Safe Staffing. Nursing Scope of Practice. Universal Health Care. Opioid abuse responses. Policy regarding reproductive rights. Marijuana prescribing, or any issue you are passionate about.
