Edgar Schein’s three levels model of organizational culture: artifacts, espoused values, and basic assumptions. In Schein’s book “Organization Culture and Leadership” (1992) describes the culture group as a pattern of basic assumptions that the group learn to resolve its problems of external adaptation and leaders as the correct the way they think, perceive and feel about the issues. The approach Schein’s recommends for inquiring about culture is an iterative, clinical approach, which is similar to a therapeutic relationship between a psychologist and a patient.
They may be used to assess organization leadership effectiveness by measuring the artifacts. The artifact is the surfaces of the leadership, such as presentation of attire, which can be easily distinguish but difficult to understand. Secondly, espoused values assess the leaders conscious strategies, goals and philosophies. Lastly, basic underlying assumptions assess the essence of understanding why things happen the way they do. These basic assumptions from around deeper dimensions of human existence such as the nature humans, human relationships and activity, reality and truth.
