Staphylococcus Epidermidis
Staph epidermidis is a permanent member of the normal human flora that is commonly found on the skin and mucous membranes. As part of the normal flora, the bacteria have a benign relationship with the host and are frequently observed to prevent the colonization of the body by bacteria like staphylococcus aureus (Claudel et al. 287). However, the bacteria can be opportunistic and cause some infections, especially those associated with medical device use. Additionally, the bacteria is an important opportunistic pathogen for patients with injuries and causes approximately 20% of orthopedic device-related infections (Sabate Bresco et al. 1401). Healthcare providers should be cautious when using medical devices to minimize infections and reduce costs associated with infection with Staph epidermidis.
Staphylococcus epidermidis is among the common causes of healthcare-associated bloodstream infections. Those at risk for developing infection include patients with prosthetic valves, cardiac devices, central lines, and those requiring frequent Iv use (Ehlers et al. 417). Upon infection, patients usually present with symptoms like inflammation, erythema, or purulence around the area of device insertion. The management of patients with this infection is done using antibiotics like vancomycin given intravenously. About 80% of negative Staph isolates are methicillin-resistant and treatment may warrant the use of beta-lactam antibiotics like oxacillin (Sabate Bresco et al. 1401). Overall, early consult with infection prevention teams is important to effectively treat affected patients.
